The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) has launched a major emergency operation to contain an oil spill in Maduru Oya Reservoir, following the crash of a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) helicopter on 09th May. The incident has raised serious environmental concerns, prompting a swift, coordinated response involving multiple agencies.
The SLCG immediately deployed pollution control teams with containment booms and oil-absorbent materials to prevent the spill from spreading further and reduce its environmental impact.
Maduru Oya Reservoir is a vital freshwater source supporting both irrigation and drinking water needs in the region. This operation highlights the SLCG’s continued commitment to environmental protection not only along Sri Lanka’s coasts but also within its inland waterways.
