SRI LANKA COAST GUARD LEADS WITH CONSERVATION EFFORTS CELEBRATING WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY

Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to protecting marine and coastal ecosystems, and as part of its ongoing Blue Green Domain initiative, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard conducted a series of impactful environmental programmes in collaboration with several local stakeholders to mark World Environment Day 2026.

Aimed at promoting the sustainable preservation of oceans and coastal areas, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard initiated planting of over 1,600 Mangrove and Mudilla saplings at several locations around the island.

Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, in collaboration with the Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management, planted 300 mangrove saplings in the Cod Bay Fishery Harbour area and the adjoining lagoon ecosystems of Valaichchenai and Sampalthivu in the Eastern Province.

In the Northern Province, 400 Mangrove saplings were planted in the Ponnalai area.

Additionally, 480 Mudilla saplings were planted in Hambantota, Nilwella, Mirissa, Galle, Hikkaduwa, and Balapitiya in the Southern Province.

Further, strengthening these conservation efforts an additional 500 Mudilla saplings were planted along the coastal stretches of Panadura, Waskaduwa, Modara, and Wellawatte in the Western Province in coordination with INSEE cement.
