SRI LANKA COAST GUARD CONDUCTS DENGUE PREVENTION PROGRAMME.

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard, in coordination with other stakeholders, conducted a cleaning programme to curb the spread of dengue, a serious viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquito species, which is rapidly spreading across Sri Lanka. As part of this initiative, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, together with officers from the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Office, Weligama, and other stakeholders, conducted a special dengue prevention programme in the Udupila area of Mirissa on 10^th June 2026.

Furthermore, a number of activities were carried out covering the Mirissa area which accommodates a large number of foreigners. These activities included identifying and eliminating potential mosquito breeding grounds, collecting and disposing of discarded items that could accumulate water, cleaning blocked drainage systems in the area, and conducted awareness programmes for local residents and hotel owners on dengue prevention and control measures.

In addition, personnel from the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Police, the Civil Security Department, Public Health Inspectors serving in the Weligama area, and local residents actively participated in this programme.
