SRI LANKA COAST GUARD CONDUCTS THREE OPERATIONS AGAINST ILLICIT DRUGS AND ILLEGAL CIGARETTES

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) has conducted three intelligence-led operations in Beruwala, Midigama and Thihagoda, resulting in the arrest of six suspects and the seizure of suspected heroin, approximately 1,270 pharmaceutical tablets and capsules, and around 4,000 illicit cigarettes.

Intelligence received by the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Intelligence Staff at CGS Beruwala led to an operation in which three suspects were arrested at Beruwala Harbour while in possession of approximately 848 mg of suspected heroin.

In a separate operation at Midigama, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Intelligence Staff at SLCG Rohana, in coordination with the Police and Sri Lanka Air Force personnel, conducted a joint operation at a roadblock. Two suspects travelling in a car were arrested, and approximately 1,270 pharmaceutical tablets and capsules, including pregabalin-based products, were seized. The products were allegedly being transported for sale without a valid licence.

Meanwhile, in Thihagoda, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Intelligence Staff at SLCG Rohana, with the assistance of the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), Matara, arrested a suspect allegedly preparing to sell approximately 4,000 illicit cigarettes bearing the Manchester and Platinum brands.

These operations reflect the Sri Lanka Coast Guard’s continued commitment to combating illicit drug-related activities, the unlawful distribution of pharmaceutical products and illegal tobacco products. Through intelligence-led operations and close cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, the Sri Lanka Coast Guard continues to contribute to law enforcement and the security of Sri Lanka’s coastal communities.

The suspects and seized items will be dealt with in accordance with the applicable legal procedures.
