SLCG APPREHENDED APPROX 300 NO’S ILLEGALLY HARVESTED LOBSTERS AND ILLEGAL FISHING NETS

The Sri Lanka Coast Guard personnel deployed at Coast Guard Station Kirinda conducted a combined search operation in Kirinda sea area with the assistance of Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources staff, Hambanthota to apprehend illegally caged lobsters out at sea on 31st October 2018. Lobster fishing has been banned during the months of February, September and October as per Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Act, No. 2 of 1996 since it is the reproductive season.

SLCG ARRESTED SIX FISHERMEN WITH 3KG OF SHARK FINS AND 38KG OF DRY SHARK

Sri Lanka Coast guard personnel on duty at Fishing Marshaling Point Cod bay arrested 06 fishermen with 08 No’s of shark fins (03 Kg) and Dry Shark 38 Kg whilst checking process was carried out for returning multiday fishing trawlers at 1030 hrs on 01st October 2018 and handed over same to Assistance Director Fisheries of Trincomalee for further investigations and legal actions.

SEVEN FOREIGNERS RESCUED AT NILAWELI BEACH

Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Lifesavers attached to lifesaving post at Nilaweli in Eastern region rescued seven foreigners with the help of Police Lifesavers while drowning at Nilaweli beach at 0940 hours on 23rd September 2018. The victims were one male and six females from USA and India. A five year old girl was also among them and others were between 26 to 54 years old. The quick response of lifesavers into the incident enabled saving of valuable lives of seven tourists, and rescued persons were handed over to their relatives. This rescue marked the 1114th life rescue of SLCG todate by accomplishing the SLCG Lifesaving motto “We Save Lives”.

SRI LANKA COAST GUARD RESPONSED FOR SEIZING OIL SPILL AT COD BAY FISHERY HARBOUR

Sri Lanka Coast Guard Oil Spill Response Management Team (OSRT) deployed in Coast Guard Eastern Region with the assistance of Sri Lanka Navy responded swiftly for an oil spill incident occurred due to capsized fishing boat ‘Dulaj Putha VII’ whilst hoisting by a crane for repair works at the Cod Bay fishery harbour on 11th September 2018. Oil Spill Response Management team managed to contain and recover spilled oil during the operation.

SLCG RESPONDED PROMPTLY TO MINIMISE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE OF MUTHURAJAWELA OIL SPILL

On receipt of the information from Ceylon Petroleum Corporation about the suspected oil spill from a pipeline carrying oil to the Muthurajawela Oil Refinery Complex on 08th September 2018, SLCG deployed oil spill response teams with equipments to Dikowita and Uswetakeyyawa area while two ships which are donated recently by the Japanese Government, Sri Lanka Coast Guard ships ‘Samaraksha’ and ‘Samudra Raksha’ sailed to the suspected area to assess the situation and expedite the cleaning up process.

Sri Lanka Coast Guard received 02 Inshore Patrol Craft (IPCs) built by the Inshore Patrol Craft Construction Project of Sri Lanka Navy on 07th September 2018 at the official handing over ceremony held at Colombo harbour. SRI LANKA COAST GUARD CONDUCTS BASIC LIFE SAVING COURSE FOR UNDERGRADUATES OF UVA WELLASSA UNIVERSITY

The Life Saving Training School (LSTS) Balapitiya, of Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) conducted five days Basic and Resuscitation level life saving training course to a group of undergraduates of Uva Wellassa University. The course commenced on 20th August and ceremonially terminated on 24thAugust 2018. It was the third batch of students from the Uva Wellassa University who followed Life Saving training at LSTS, and the batch comprised with 11 male and 06 female students.
